COVID-19 IMPACT

The reality of covid-19 at camp:

Thank you for your patience as we have wrestled with trying to understand the impact of this worldwide pandemic. It is with great sadness that I must inform you that Camp Homewood will not be offering any of our planned programs this summer. Who would have imagined how deeply this crisis would upend our lives when we heard the first news reports in January!

This isn’t the announcement we were hoping to make, and we understand that this will be difficult news for you and your family. Kids have already missed so much over the past couple of months, and we know they will grieve this loss deeply! A week at Homewood is one of the highlights of the entire year.

Camp is about gathering together.  It is cramming kids onto benches to sing and laugh during firesides.  It is sharing amazing food around a crowded table in a packed Dining Room.  It is sharing bows and arrows, paintbrushes, and canoe paddles.  It is meeting kids and families from all over western Canada (and leaders from all over the world!) to make memories that last a lifetime.  Camp is the opposite of social distancing!  Camper safety has always been our highest priority, and we agree with Dr. Bonnie Henry that overnight camping is just too risky at this time.

Sincerely,

Paul Bailey  (General Director, Pacific Coast Children’s Mission – Camp Homewood)

What does this look like for Camp, financially?

Many people have asked me about Homewood’s financial position and what they can do to help.  Cancelling our summer programs and almost 100 days of spring rentals has impacted our finances significantly.  Our 2020 revenues are down by over $750,000.  Even if rentals are permitted this fall, we anticipate that they will be substantially smaller than in the past.

Getting ready for the summer that didn’t happen cost tens of thousands of dollars.  In addition, our fixed costs (horse feed, insurance, utilities, etc.) exceed $30,000 per month.  Because of COVID-19, we have no way of covering these costs.  Please give now if you can help us – we sure would appreciate it!

We know that many families have been profoundly impacted by this crisis as we are.  Please do not feel any obligation to give – donate only if you can afford it.  Thanks for caring about camp!
